Robert Glen & Cora Green Toney Appalachian Studies Scholarship

Scholarship Information

Dr. Grace Toney Edwards, the first Director of the Appalachian Regional Studies Center and Professor Emerita in English and Appalachian Studies, established this scholarship fund in memory of her father, Robert Glen Toney. The student-led Appalachian Events Committee raises money for this fund through the annual auction at the Appalachian Folk Arts Festival. The sale of folk art created by regional crafters, such as Willard Gayheart, Jane Jones, Charles Davis, Verily Simpkins, and Norris Turner, has helped to promote Appalachian awareness as well as support the scholarship. Dr. Edwards has been noted for her outstanding classroom skills as well as her dedication to enhancing the continued growth of education. In 1989, she received the Radford University Foundation’s Outstanding Teaching Award. Additionally, she received a Radford University Foundation Grant in 1989, which was used to study Appalachian-Scottish culture. The Robert Glen Toney Memorial is one of many endeavors Dr. Edwards has made to influence education. Her father is not only remembered, but students, such as you, will continue to learn and appreciate the gift of education. In January 1998, Dr. Edward’s mother, Cora Green Toney, passed away and the scholarship was renamed to honor both of her parents.

Scholarship Criteria

• Applicants must be a full-time rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
• Have and maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA while a scholarship recipient.
• Must demonstrate involvement in the Appalachian Studies Program through classes and/or the Appalachian Events Committee.
