H. S. “Buddy” and Janet Johnston Outstanding Student Worker Scholarship

Founded in 2000, this scholarship was created to recognize student workers who demonstrate truly outstanding service to their respective work area and the University as a whole. Both of the Johnstons spent their working careers in the field of education. Mr. Johnston spent 31 years in the Student Financial Aid Office retiring in 2000. He later worked as a financial aid consultant for both USA Funds Services and Sallie Mae. Mrs. Johnston taught 30 years as an English teacher in the Tazewell and Pulaski County School Systems and completed her teaching career at Radford High School, also retiring in 2000.

Eligibility

  • All on-campus undergraduate and graduate work study/work scholarship student workers and all graduate assistants and teaching fellows are eligible to be nominated for this award.
  • Students should have worked at least one semester prior to their nomination.
  • Selection process is managed by a campus-wide committee selected by the internal governance system.

Criteria

  • Possess a minimum GPA of 2.5 (undergraduate) or 3.25 (graduate).
  • Have worked all their contracted hours.
  • Provide truly dependable service to university community.
  • Have excellent working relationship with other students, faculty, and staff.
  • Exceed the “call of duty” in performing in an outstanding manner in their campus work tasks.
