Mary Hester Long Scholarship in Elementary Education

Scholarship Information

This scholarship was created by Mrs. Long’s family to assist incoming freshmen from Blacksburg High School who plan to major in education. Mrs. Long attended Radford Normal School (now Radford University) and taught elementary school in the Blacksburg area for many years. Mrs. Long’s love of young children and their education showed in her dedication to her work and family. Mrs. Long’s granddaughter, Pamela Garthune Hanshaw is a 1981 Radford graduate.

Her daughter and son-in-law, established the scholarship to support future elementary school teachers from the Blacksburg area.

Scholarship Criteria

• Students must be a full-time student.
• Declared a major in Interdisciplinary Studies with an Elementary Education Licensure option.
• A Blacksburg High School graduate.
• Must have demonstrated financial need.
