The John Preston McConnell Memorial Scholarship Endowment
Scholarship Information
In 1911 Dr. John Preston McConnell was invited to become the President of the new State Normal and Industrial School for Women in East Radford, which opened its doors in 1913. McConnell served as Radford’s president until declining health led to his retirement in 1937. He was born in Scott Country, Virginia on February 22, 1866. Dr. McConnell passed away in 1941. In 2013 the McConnell Clan endowed this scholarship in his memory.
Scholarship Criteria
- Must be from Scott County, Virginia or be a descendant of immigrant George McConnell.
- Must be a current undergraduate student (rising sophomore or above).
- Shall have a minimum 3.0 grade point average.
- Must have demonstrated leadership ability.
- Must provide evidence of community service.
