RUC-John L. Echternach, Jr. Memorial Scholarship

John L. Echternach, Jr., D.P.T., the former academic coordinator of Clinical Education and assistant professor in the JSCH Physcial Therapist Assistant Program, was critically injured while responding to an emergency call as a volunteer with the Boones Mill Fire Department in 2012. This scholarship was created in honor of his dedication to and passion for teaching the healthcare leaders of tomorrow. This annual scholarship provides assistance for tuition, books, and other related fees to a second, third of fourth year student pursuing a degree at Radford University Carilion (RUC).

  • Must be in good standing and maintain a C average or better in prior years at JCHS/RUC
  • Must have served at least 2 years as an active volunteer EMS Provider and/or firefighter in one or more municipal fire or rescue agencies
  • Must have a letter of recommendation from the rescue captain or fire chief that includes the number of volunteer hours served and description of service dedication
  • Applicant must provide a written narrative that details volunteer experience and lessons learned during that experience; why they have chosen to pursue degree; and why they are applying for this scholarship

  2. If you answered yes to the previous question, you must provide a letter of recommendation from the rescue captain or fire chief that includes the number of volunteer hours you served and the description of your service dedication. Please provide the name and email of your reference.
  3. You must provide a written narrative that details your volunteer experience and lessons learned during that experience; why you have chosen to pursue your degree; and why you are applying for this scholarship.
  4. I release my academic information and any FAFSA data submitted to RUC (EFC and remaining need, if a FAFSA is on file) and my contact information to Carilion’s Foundation Board so that they may make a final determination on whether I will be awarded one or more of Carilion’s Education Foundation Scholarships. I understand that Carilion’s Foundation Board will use my contact information to notify me of any scholarships for which I have been selected. I understand that Carilion’s Foundation Board will not share any of my information.
